Home of the TEA, Texas Education Agency

http://www.tea.state.tx.us/

The mission of the Texas Education Agency is to provide leadership, guidance and resources to help schools meet the educational needs of all students.

The Texas Education Agency (TEA) comprises the commissioner of education and agency staff. The TEA and the State Board of Education (SBOE) guide and monitor activities and programs related to public education in Texas. The SBOE consists of 15 elected members representing different regions of the state. One member is appointed chair by the governor.

The State Board for Educator Certification (SBEC) oversees all aspects of the preparation, certification and standards of conduct of public school educators. There are 11 members on the board who are appointed by the governor, and three non-voting members. TEA provides staff support to the SBEC board.

TESTING, TAKS

Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) Resources

updated June 16, 2010

In 1999 the 76th Session of the Texas Legislature enacted Senate Bill 103, mandating implementation of a new statewide testing program. The new testing requirements, subsequently named the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS), were implemented in spring 2003. The TAKS test is designed to measure the extent to which a student has learned and is able to apply the defined knowledge and skills at each tested grade level. Every TAKS test is directly aligned to the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS).

TAKS includes an accommodated form called TAKS (Accommodated) for students served by special education who meet the eligibility requirements for certain specific accommodations. The TAKS (Accommodated) form includes format accommodations (larger font, fewer items per page, etc.) and contains no embedded field-test items.

Required Assessments

By law, all eligible Texas public school students are assessed in

  • Grades 3–9 reading
  • Grades 3–10 and exit level mathematics
  • Grades 4 and 7 writing
  • Grade 10 and exit level English language arts (ELA)
  • Grades 5, 8, 10, and exit level science
  • Grades 8, 10, and exit level social studies

CIRRICULUM, TEKS

Curriculum and instructional materials are integral parts of a public school system. The State Board of Education periodically updates the state’s curriculum standards called the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS). Textbooks and other instructional materials are then written for children based on those standards. More than 48 million textbooks are distributed by the Texas Education Agency to Texas public school students each year.
